Magic Dolls by Tikuna Folk
Magic Dolls by Tikuna Folk
Shamanic dolls in the Ticuna community are not a personal invention but a centuries-old tradition rooted in ancestral memory and spiritual practice, preserved through stories passed down by elders and even ancient stone-wall depictions of figures wearing ceremonial costumes and masks. These dolls are understood to embody spirits, ancestors, and protective energies, and they are used by shamans during rituals as a bridge between the physical and spiritual realms, helping to seek guidance, channel blessings, and support healing and protection ceremonies aimed at restoring balance and health. Each doll carries symbolic meaning through its form and color, often representing specific spirits, animals, or elements of nature, and during ceremonies they may be danced, invoked, and animated to activate their spiritual purpose. The craft is also a communal practice that strengthens family and community bonds, as people gather to create, bless, and transmit the knowledge across generations. Within this living tradition, the artist’s contemporary contribution is a heightened precision and meticulousness in the painting—such as depicting hummingbirds with species-specific accuracy in shape and coloration—along with the aspiration to develop future collections organized by species and to produce life-sized shamanic masks for both adults and children, ensuring the tradition remains culturally meaningful while continuing to evolve with care and fidelity.
